The priests were given clothes that set them apart, and then given a task of representing God to people and people to God, and they couldn’t choose how they should do it according to their own whims or fancies, nor could they leave their post.
The reflection in the New Testament, particularly in 1 Peter, is that we have become that people for the sake of the world – and we are set apart, can’t duck the responsibilities, and have to minister in the way Jesus would.
